Yard Badges
A badge system for households to publicly showcase their home's clean energy features to neighbors in their front yard by competing with other houses in a challenge to collect all three badges.
The Yard Badge tool is an innovative community engagement strategy designed to encourage households to adopt climate-friendly upgrades and showcase their environmental leadership.
The tool consists of three round outdoor badges, each representing a significant step toward sustainability:
- Solar Badge - Awarded to homes that have installed solar panels.
- EV Badge - Displayed by households owning an electric vehicle.
- Electric Badge - Given to homes that have transitioned to being fully electric and eliminated natural gas use.
These visually appealing badges are placed in the front yards of participating homes, creating a tangible symbol of progress and sparking conversations among neighbors.
The Yard Badge initiative is part of the Block Club Program, a gamified effort to foster collective action within neighborhoods. The program sets a shared goal: for every house on the block to earn all three badges within a set timeframe.
By integrating friendly competition, social proof, and community pride, the Yard Badges drive meaningful transitions away from fossil fuels, reduce emissions, and build momentum toward a cleaner future.
